On July 12 2011 A Dance With Dragons released. I remember picking the book up and reading it in between seasons 1 and 2 of the show, and wondering what was going to happen in the next book. Now 10 years later, I never thought I would still be asking that question.

Martin said on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in December 2022 he had "like 1,100, 1,200 pages" done, with 400 or 500 to go before The Winds of Winter was complete. Almost a year on, the author seemingly still has the same amount of work to be done. Emphasis mine, so I'm assuming the latter
George RR Martin have been a great inspiration for me, along with Tolkien and Brandon Sandersson, even though they write different types of books. Right now I am reading a really good book called The Briar King by Greg Keyes. If anyone enjoyes George RR than Keyes is up your alley!
Martin seems to have fallen into the same trap that other famous authors seem to hit. They submit a book as a relatively unknown but talented author. A good editor helps them polish the early work into some excellent books. Then they get popular. That translates into more power for a more famous and important author.
